Making margaritas at home - simple question?
Short answer - you don't need triple sec.

Long answer - Adding orange liqueur (such as Triple Sec or the higher end versions like Cointreau or Grand Marnier) to margaritas are an American invention and (especially given they are French in origin) weren't ever used with tequila in Mexico.

The Tradicional is a good tequila, although the Cuervo margarita mix is not very good (mostly corn syrup and green food coloring and artificial lime juice). If you are definitely using that mix then adding triple sec will be fine.

However, if you want a really good margarita, one worthy of the tequila you bought, give the mix to your friends and do the following:

1. Add 2 oz of tequila to a cocktail shaker with ice

2. juice 1 lime into the shaker

3. add 1 tablespoon agave nectar (looks like honey, made from the same cactus as tequila). Bar syrup works too if you don't want to buy the agave nectar.

4. add 1/4 cup water

Shake and serve over ice for the best margarita you will ever have.

If you want to save time and energy, you can buy a fresh squeezed limeade in the fresh juice section and just mix that in equal parts to tequila and that will still be pretty good.

Either way, I would not add triple sec. If you really like orange flavor and want it in your margarita, go for Cointreau. Much better than Triple Sec and not as pricey as Grand Marnier.
Reply:Triple sec is usually used in a margarita, but it is not ALWAYS used...here is a recipe for an Italian Margarita.....and yes, it is very good;)

Italian Margarita

The Italian margarita recipe is called so because it used amaretto, an almond flavored Italian liqueur.

1 1/2oz tequila

3/4oz amaretto - this is used instead of triple sec

3/4oz fresh lime juice

2oz of sweet and sour mix

splash of orange juice

Muddle limes, pour ingredients, shake with ice, and then strain into a bucket glass filled with ice. Garnish with a lime wedge.

...also a frozen margarita doesn't require Triple sec, just your tequila, the margarita mix, ice, lime juice, salt and lime wedge.
Reply:This is a closely guarded secret (until now obviously) but I have the BEST margarita recipe that exists. I didn't make it up although I wish I did. Everyone I know thinks it's the best too! Are you ready?

Take a small can of frozen limeade and dump it in the blender. Refill the same can with beer (it doesn't matter what kind), dump it in the blender. Refill the same can with tequila (it doesn't matter what kind but don't use the really cheap stuff), blend with lots of ice. It's to die for!!
Reply:I would definately add the triple sec. But then, I would also add more lime juice, since the Cuervo mix is too sweet for my tastes.

Best advice to you is experiment! Thats the beauty of margaritas...by the time you've experimented, you've either got it right, or you just don't care anymore!
Reply:If it's already in there, you probably won't notice - and if it's not, ditto:) That's the thing that'll give you the heartburn! When in doubt, just add more tequila:)
Reply:...try the blender icon too...
Reply:YO QUIERO SHOTS OF TEQUILA
Reply:Add the triple sec

Smooches;)
Reply:A margarita is made w/ triple sec. it makes it a bit sweeter.
