How do I make cinnamon roll flavored oatmeal?

I buy plain oatmeal in bulk and sweeten it with agave nectar but I wanted to know if I were to add cinnamon powder, would it taste like a cinnamon roll or would I need to add vanilla extract to it as well..thanks

How do I make cinnamon roll flavored oatmeal?
cinnamon and vanilla
Reply:I cook my oatmeal and as it is cooking I add a spoon ful of butter. Then I add about a quarter cup of brown sugar, a dash of cinnamon, and some raisins. A dash of vanilla. Then I pour just a bit of heavy cream over the top when it is done. Tastes just like cinnamon roll.
Reply:Vanilla, good idea. Also, butter and powdered sugar.
Reply:What they said above and maybe powdered sugar. That's pretty much what the icing on a cinnamon roll is made of.
Reply:try it and see....it won't taste gross!

I would put cinnamon powder, vanilla extract and a dash of butter flavouring
Reply:cinnamon and vinilla
Reply:search google for the recipe

Which liquor would be considered the healthiest?

I know beer is bad but I was wondering which liquor would be better calorie wise. I know wine is good for you and I have always thought tequila was ok cause it is made from the agave plant. I just want to know which is better for the body. Also I know the whole alcahol part so I dont need to read about that.

Which liquor would be considered the healthiest?
Red Wine becasue of the high levels of anti-oxidants it carries. You should limit to 1 glass a day (about 175ml).

White wine is high in calories and carrys no benefits just like beer.

Stout/heavy (Guiness) would be the best bet in beer.

From a calorie point of view, clear spirits are best due to the high alcohol content but they are much worse due to that same alcohol content and liver damage and have no health benefits.
Reply:vodka and soda water

i think the white spirtits are best, as long as you mix them with low calorie mixers
Reply:I've always heard red wine is good for you in moderation.
Reply:are you joking???
Reply:none
Reply:red, white and rose wine in moderation is good for your health. 1-2 glasses a day, specially red wine is really good for your health. may not be as good for your pocket, though.

Is there a way to make homebrew tequila?

Like from scratch. We have local agave plants (edible kind) and I'd like to try it!

Is there a way to make homebrew tequila?
only if you have a still. It is a distilled beverage much like scotch or vodka.
Reply:You could if you have all the materials necessary.

Tequila is made from the blue agave plant primarily. So you would need lot of blue agave. That is why tequila is made in Mexico.

The agave is fermented and then the liquid distilled so you would need a way to distill the fermented liquid.

Then the tequila is aged for a period of time. My experience is the longer it is aged the better the tequila is.

Tequila is not anything new. It has probably been made for centuries the same old way.

Go for it!
Reply:Possible, but check ur heating bill. Agave is a notoriously hard plant to boil- which is an important part of this process. Most good tequilerias do theirs for a few days.
Reply:Doesn't sound like it. Check out Epinions.com - homemade tequila facts.
Reply:I've been to Tequila several times and seen it done.

You must trim, the leaves from the plant.

Take the big pinapple-looking thing and cut it into big chunks.

You dont want to boil this. Bake it at low temps (300f or so) 'till it becomes soft and the juice is sweet. (you've just converted the starches to sugar).

Now you must rinse with hot water all of the sugar from the baked pina. This is a mess and will reqire a very large strainer and a huge bucket to catch the sweet run-off.

Once you've milked the pina for all of it's sweet nectar, cool it down to about 70f and add brewers yeast. Wait for the juice to ferment into the beer (pulque), about 5 days.

Put the pulque in a still and distill it into spirits.

Ole!

You really should invest in a book that can walk you through the steps.

Is there any alcohol made from cactus fruit?

I can't think of any, unless the agave plant is considered a cactus.

Is there any alcohol made from cactus fruit?
Yes there are a couple that use only the fruit of the cactus. Colonche Wine is an example. There are quite a few more that use the pulp as well. Tequila obviously but there are quite a few others that make use of the pulp.

PS. Agave is a succulent...like a cactus but different.
Reply:Tequila mang! and yes, Agave is a cactus
Reply:In the Mexican states of Puebla and Oaxaca there's a cactus called a garambuyu (spelling?) The berries are a deep, intense red. They are sometimes fermented, and the product is distilled. The result, which is coloured deep neon pink and tastes like gasoline, packs a helluva wallop.
Reply:I think that some of tequila is made from cactus juice!!!
Reply:some of the wine wines r form the extracts of CACTUS--definitely succulent ones
Reply:Yeah you can get wine made from Agave.

Is it true that tequila produces a different buzz?

I've had small amounts of tequila before, but I've never been drunk strictly off it. Does the agave plant actually change the way you feel as opposed to drinking something else of 80-proof caliber?

Is it true that tequila produces a different buzz?
I think every different kind of alcohol gives a different buzz, and hangover.
Reply:Yes it does
Reply:yes, i get mean with tequila. very aggresive. vodka and rum are more mellow and happy.
Reply:Tequila is definitely a different type of alcohol than any other type I have ever experienced, and I've experienced most all of them in my 64 years. I will not drink Tequila ever again. I have had it on two different occasions and almost blacked out both times with only a small amount taken, like two drinks. I would definitely suggest you stay away from it if you have to go to work the next day. My wife tried it once and really believed that she would never be able to walk again. She did though eventually.
Reply:to me being drunk is being drunk...but lucky me, ive never had a hangover =)
Reply:It is a high which is quite nice... this is cosed by the specific alcohols that are in tequila.
Reply:i think..... 100% pure Aguave Tequla if a lot is drank... can make you halasunate... sorry spelling lol ' hic'
Reply:a mean buzz, is what i've seen.
Reply:I think all different liquors give a different buzz. For instance; just a couple of shots of whiskey will get me drunk but I can drink rum all night and not feel a thing, gin will hit me like a ton of bricks after about three or four!

Should I bother with amending the soil if I want to transplant succulents into the ground from pots?

I live in the San Gabriel Valley of Southern California. I have of few agave and opuntia varieties I'd like to transplant. Is springtime a good time to do this? My soil isn't clay like and the area I want to use hasn't had any type of plantings in years, except weeds.

Should I bother with amending the soil if I want to transplant succulents into the ground from pots?
Most succulents come from desert or arrid climates so you would expect them to do well in poor soil. That doesn't mean they won't benefit from better soil.

My mom once brought a barrel cactus from West Texas and planted it in South Louisiana. It grew like the dickens.
Reply:Oil Field is correct. The only other thing is to ensure that you have good drainage. Almost all succulents hate to have there feet always in the water!!
Reply:Before you transplant add sand and gravel with some compost.

Does adding sweetener to a vinegar drink take away the benefits?

I've read from several sources that although vinegar is an acid, once ingested, it helps make your body alkaline. Will adding honey, agave, or maple syrup, to the vinegar drink render it useless? Or will the drink still help to make the body alkaline?

Thanks!

Does adding sweetener to a vinegar drink take away the benefits?
Honegar is an old remedy, going back centuries. Equal amounts of honey and apple cider vinegar are mixed with warm water. It is used to stabilize the electrolytes of the body from the effects of diarrhea, thus neutralizing the environment that disease thrives in. It is also good for sore throats, coughs of all kinds, asthma (as a preventative), I could keep on going.

Honey adds to the benefits of ACV. Not sure about maple syrup having any benefits, other than to make it sweet. However, maple syrup does stabilize the body's blood sugar better than honey.
Reply:I usually mix apple cider vinegar w/ a little honey to make it more tolerable...i've never heard of it being a problem
Reply:adding honey Is fine.

What is another type of tequila equal to patron silver that is much more least costly?

I want it almost equal to that of patron silver because patron silver has 100% agave, and I don't get hangovers after I drink it, but is there something in maybe the $15-$20 plus range? Thanks!

What is another type of tequila equal to patron silver that is much more least costly?
Milagro isn't bad. It runs about $25 a bottle or so. It's 100% Agave as well, plus it tastes like its from the same region as Patron. Patron tastes like it is from a highlands where the soil has more clay and iron in it. Similar to the area where my favorite tequila is from, Cazadores (although it's not the silver). Sauza Hornitos is ok, as well as their cheaper 100% agave versions, however, most of their process is automated, and lacks the hand crafted appeal that I look for in tequilas. My girlfriend likes Don Julio, but it can be pricey as well. There... now she will stop asking me to type that. Anyway, as long as it's 100% Blue Agave, you should be ok. Just gotta keep "testing"!
Reply:Try Sauza Hornitos
Reply:You get what you pay for when buying quality Tequila's. You are going to have to just start buying some cheaper ones and see what suits you best. Everyone's taste is different so what one person says is great may not be good to you. Don't be afraid to try something you have never heard of, you may find something great.

GOOD LUCK
Reply:If you want good you have to pay but there is much better than patron, some tequilas i recomend are Casa Noble, Tesoro and Chinaco
Reply:If you live in an area that has Trader Joes, look for the Puerto Vallarta brand. When I lived in California, I used to buy a 750ml bottle of Reposado for about $13, which is the cheapest I've ever seen in the US for a 100% agave tequila.

That was 3 years ago, so it may have gone up a little.

In the under $20 realm for a 750ml bottle of 100% agave tequila:

1. Cabrito - Although sometimes I see it with the 100% agave on the bottle and sometimes not, so make sure you see that.

2. Dos Manos - blanco or reposado

If you go just a few bucks over $20, you can add:

1. Cuervo Tradicional Reposado - I know most Cuervo's are junk, but this is one of 2 good ones they make.

2. 1800 Blanco or Reposado

3. Cazadores - Blanco or Reposado

4. Corazon

Personally I would avoid the Sauza Hornitos. It is 100% agave, unlike most of what Sauza makes, but it is still not a great tasting tequila, and pales compared to everything I've mentioned here.
Reply:There are many Tequilas and the cheaper ones are called 'Mixtos' which means they are not 100% blue Agave but have at least 50% blue Agave. Try Sauza Gold. For the top of the line, I like Grand Patron Platinum. On 24 July 2006, a private collector from the USA paid US$225,000 for a bottle of ultra premium Ley .925 Tequila at an auction in London. Super premium Tequilas are for savouring to Bossonova music with a red hot black haired voluptuous beauty at your side...ay, yai, yai, CARAMBA!! Enjoy! {:-)

What's the difference between regular corn syrup and high fructose corn syrup?

Is corn syrup any better for you? I'm attempting to go on a diet that cuts out most "Old World" foods and only uses ingredients native to the Americas. Part of it involves cutting back on sweeteners, and where needed, replacing sugar with Native American ingredients like maple syrup, agave syrup, honey, and corn syrup. I'm also going to give up high fructose corn syrup, as it processed and unnatural.

What's the difference between regular corn syrup and high fructose corn syrup?
HFCS is a super concentrated form of corn syrup. It will spike your insulin levels. Repeated spiking of you insulin CAN lead to Type II diabetes. I avoid all packages that contain either. If you had to rate one better than the other I would say regular corn syrup is less damaging than HFCS. I prefer natural sugars to added ones. Stick with oatmeal or natural granolas instead of a boxed cereals.

How can I make a healthy homemade ice cream creamier?
maybe soy milk. But the light will not give you the creaminess.
Reply:a little more milk or cream, maybe even whipping cream
Reply:you could try adding some mashed banana or some honey.

you should tell me how to make ice cream, coz you kinda made me crave it now. tsk tsk

Reply:Creme Friase (spelt wrong but you know what I mean) it is a really good substitute for cream.. and cheaper in calories. also yogurt.

Will jose cuervo tradicional 100% agave give youa headache? (assuming you only drink like 2 shots of it )?

No it shouldn't.

What most people react to (especially the ones who claim they hate tequila) are the junk put into non-100% agave tequilas. Non-100% agave ones are only 51% agave with the rest being grain alcohols, corn syrup and other junk. THAT'S what gives people headaches and hangovers.

Yours is 100% and is a decent one, so it really shouldn't cause any negative reactions, especially with only 2 shots.

...and?

You get BLUE AGAVE all over the year?
these are harvested frequently, since the climate is warm all year.
Reply:Yes.

Agave doesen't ripen seasonally like fruit. The plants are harvested whole when they reach a certain age/maturity, usually from 7-10 years old.

In thier place, new baby agave shoots are planted and the wait begins again.

Anyone tried Agave Nectar instead of sugar?

I hope everyone checks out your profile and your fake earned best answer ratio! Hope everyone sees that all your best answers come from your alias name of Phyus I.

Anyone tried Agave Nectar instead of sugar?
No, I'm a diabetic and I use Splenda, no after tastes like with some fruit based products
Reply:Yes. I have tried Madhava Agave Nectar and I think it tastes really nice and it's quite healthy too. It is a bit like honey.
Reply:I like it because it adds sweetness but doesn't add flavor like honey.
Reply:I LOVE agave and use for everything. Its great as a pancake or waffle syrup, super as a sugar replacement in baking-cookies, muffins, etc. I make raw food bars with it, adding it to nuts, seeds, dates, and pulp left from juicing. Its really great stuff.
Reply:oh we use it, it taste just like honey. it's very good
Reply:I haven't used it "instead of sugar," but I use it as a liquid sweetener, just like maple syrup and brown rice syrup.
Reply:Yep, give me the sugar.
Reply:Yes, it's awesome!!! And u just double it up for recipes (cuz it's liquid). Goes good in tea, and doesn't affect your blood sugar like honey or sugar. :D
Reply:agave nectar is actually not an artificial sweetner. i no longer use sugar and only agave..u can use it in baking, cooking, drinks, and to sweeten up foods. I recommend to use the light instead of the dark personally because the dark nectar seems to be a little strong. but the light nectar is great.i highly recommend it.
Reply:Carefull with artificial sweetners they can cause memory loss check this site out it tells you all about artificial sweeteners

Can diabetics use Agave Nectar as a sweetener ???

I am making a dessert with no sugar but Agave Nectar. Can my diabetic friend eat it???

Can diabetics use Agave Nectar as a sweetener ???
It really depends what type diabetic you are and how severe it is. Any type of sugar, sweetener or carb can increase your glucose and blood pressure levels. Agave has a lower glucose content than other sweeteners. I have done lots of research on this and have found that avoiding these foods and increasing your protein and good fats will maintain your blood sugar level. If you wanted to you could try testing your glucose level first and then have maybe a couple drops of it by itself and then test your glucose level a few minutes after to see for yourself how it effects you personally. I'd suggest having plenty of protein that day before hand though. I also wouldn't suggest any sweetener on a regular basis. Stevia through Amazon herbs is a safe alternative to a sweetener , doesn't cause bloating or cramping, and has a great flavor. (and sorry, but I don't sell it, just used it myself). A single drop of that goes a long way. If making a dessert, you might play with it ...depending on how large the the portion, maybe up to 7 drops but just for yourself I think 4 would work out well. Hope that helps!
Reply:fructose or stevia would be better
Reply:Does the container have nutrition information on it? If so, the carbohydrate data should give the info your friend needs to know in order to deal with the food.

What exactly is Agave?

Its the ingredient in a bottle of "cusano rojo" tequila from mexico?

The agave plant is a type of cactus, that when distilled makes the beverage tequila. All tequila is made from the "blue" agave plant.

Can you cut the stalk on a blue agave while it's trying to bloom and keep the plant from dying?

Don't prune any trees, shrubs when trying to bloom. Pruning promotes new growth, promoting new growth after the tree/shrub has fully bloomed (leaves have fully developed) is ok. But not while it is flushing, the tree/shrub is using stored energy to flush the buds. The tree/shrub is not producing "food" if there are no leaves on it. The leaves are where photosynthesis takes place to produce "food". So pruning prior to that uses up the stored "food" energy that would normally be used for leaf flush.

Pruning stimulates now growth of shoots and woody parts. It is ok to prune after leaf flush to promote new growth but let the leaves develop first.

Can you cut the stalk on a blue agave while it's trying to bloom and keep the plant from dying?
No, an agave is like a long-lived annual -once it's bloomed, it is suppose to die.

It is done with its life cycle.
Reply:NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NEVER EVER trim a tree or shrub while it is in bloom. if you dont kill it it wont be happy. the best time to trim anything is in early spring or late fall.

Agave and Century Plants - the same thing?

Wikipedia says that agave and century plants are the same plant, called by a different name. However, the picture doesn't look like a century plant. Is there more than one kind of century plant, or is it a different veriety of agave? Are these two plants the same thing?

Agave and Century Plants - the same thing?
Agave is a genus with many species. They're called century plants because they grow for many years, flower once, and then die. This is a reproductive strategy for harsh environments called monocarpy or semelparity.

It costs a lot for them to reproduce because they are bat pollinated. They produce tons of nectar to lure the bats, and the inflorescences are really open so the bats can approach and land. The centers of the plants of one species (blue agave) where all the sugars are stored are harvested and fermented to make tequila.
Reply:Agave is the genius. The one most commonly referred to as century plant is A. americanus

tequila come from A. tequilana weber
Reply:Apparently 'Century Plant' is a broad term for all genus and species of Agave plant so that even if the species looks different, they are all 'century plants'

_____________

"I'm goin' way down south, where the blue agave grows..."?
This quote is a line from a Sammy Hagar tune called "Mas Tequila." I can't recall the name of the album off hand but it should be easy to find.

Tequila is made from the blue agave plant that is native to the Sonoran desert that covers a large portion of Mexico, Arizona, and New Mexico. So Sammy is singing about going to the source for the best Tequila.
Reply:And of course, Sammy produces his own brand of the stuff. Cabo Wabo is premium tequila and it comes in three versions, for goodness sake.
Reply:In Mexico, they make tequilla out of blue agave...is that what you're getting at?

Hows is tequila being process and what parts agave is extracted?

tequila production.

Tequila comes from the blue agave tequilana weber, which is harvested and only the hart of the agave is cooked normally in stone ovens for about 30 hours, after cooking the juices are extracted and fermented. The fermented juices are distilled two time minimum and then you have tequila blanco. Tequila Reposado has to be aged in barrels at least 2 months and anejo at least a year.

My personal favorite is Casa Noble which is a 100% blue agave, triple distilled and the best tequila made!

Hows is tequila being process and what parts agave is extracted?
I don't have a lot of time right now to answer but I think www.wikipedia.com explains the process well.... or they have a link to tell you. If you are looking to distill tequila or mescal I am not sure you will find recipes there.

Agave cactus question??

I have agave cactus in my back yard and just recently it sprout a shoot very long one. It look like it happened almost overnight because I work at my back yard every day and there was nothing just few days ago?? Can someone explain what is it?

Agave cactus question??
It is going to flower. It is also called a century plant.

Each rosette is monocarpic and grows slowly to flower only once. During flowering a tall stem or "mast" grows from the center of the leaf rosette and bears a large number of shortly tubular flowers. After development of fruit the original plant dies, but suckers are frequently produced from the base of the stem which become new plants.

Ensure that you have good winter protection, as many will not take freezes and Scottish damp weather, which causes them to rot.

I've occasionally found small ones in the cacti sections at garden centres, though this seems to be pot luck. For instance, I often see Agave Filifera around: http://www.desert-tropicals.com/Plants/A...

Hope this helps. Good luck! Rob

Is my agave plant meant to be inside or outside?

From Desert Botantical:

"Agaves are succulents that store water and nutrients in their leaves. They have fibrous, shallow roots. Although well adapted to desert climates, they require supplemental water and some shade, especially when the plants are small. Some species are also susceptible to frost."

It is the "frost" warning you must pay attention to. Other than that, check the link below for further information regarding soil, water, light %26amp; shade requirements, etc. to make an informed decision regarding your specific location -- and good luck!! They are wonderful plants!

How to transplant an agave?

agave americana

How to transplant an agave?
Indoor plants need to be transplanted into a larger container periodically, or they become pot/root-bound and their growth is retarded. Water the plant well before starting, so the soil will hold the root ball together when you remove it from the pot. If you have trouble getting the plant out of the pot, try running a blade around the edge of the pot, and gently whacking the sides to loosen the soil.

Always use fresh soil when transplanting your indoor plant. Fill around the plant gently with soil, being careful not to pack too tightly -- you want air to be able to get to the roots. After the plant is in the new pot, don't fertilize right away... this will encourage the roots to fill in their new home.

The size pot you choose is important too. Select one that is not more than about 1 inch greater in diameter. Remember, many plants prefer being somewhat pot bound. Always start with a clean pot!
Reply:Transplanting Agaves are easy, but don't forget to wear protective gloves when doing so. First you must start by not watering the plant to let the potting medium to dry out (this will help not damaging the tiny roots). Then gently loosen the sides of the pot using a trowel. then place your plant in a bigger pot with fresh potting medium. Then press the medium to hold the plant, Avoid watering for a few days (3 days would be OK). Good Luck
Reply:They are pretty hardy. Just get a bigger pot and put some more dirt in to take up the space. If it is outside just dig it up and place it in the new hole. Just dig about a foot away from the base so you don't do too much damage to the roots. I have lived in the desert for years and have transplanted many of them....9 out of 10 lived. They do get big so allow room for growth.

Raw blue agave sweetner?

any vegans eat it instead of honey? i feel like im eating it all day long. haha, does anybody know the health benefits because i heard its good for you, i just dont rememebr how.

Raw blue agave sweetner?
Agave nectar has a low glycemic index rating, which means it's broken down slowly in digestions and doesn't cause an insulin and blood sugar spike. Also, unlike sugar, it's a very environmentally friendly sweetener. The cacti that produce agave nectar can be harvested from for many years and their cultivation has minimal environmental impact.
Reply:I use Raw Agave Nectar. It's milder than honey. I use it as a sweetener in tea, cereal, baking etc.

If you are eating high raw you probably do feel like you are eating all day long.

Slainté (to your health)
Reply:Its so disappointing I've checked heaps of health food stores in my area and I just can't find any agave nectar. I did find some pear concentrate extract... made from pears and it tastes really yummy. I would definitely recommend some. =)
Reply:And I have just discovered another yummy way to eat it.

Had some hot cross buns with a smidgen of butter this morning. Yes, I know, very un-vegan like......thank God Easter only comes once a year eh!!

Anyway I also spread them with some organic raw dark agave (from 100% blue agave) and they were absolutely delicious.

Literally turned an ok bun into a sensational bun.

.
Reply:with agave syrup, there is no "good for you", only the "not bad for you".

Agave syrup has calories and no nutritional value. Its value in vegetarian and vegan cooking is that it is semi-natural, and is perceived to be raw.

Although it has been claimed that agave syrup does not upset diabetics, it does affect "sugar addicts," who tend to include it in whatever they can think of (just as you have said that you are eating a lot of agave syrup.

As a nutritionist, observing people's reactions to agave syrup, I am inclined to believe that it probably does, in fact, affect blood sugar levels, and that it is contra-indicated for people who are working at eliminating candidiasis. (In truth, I am also going on my own personal experience - I have a sugar sensitivity, and, so, must avoid any and all sugars -- I thought that agave syrup would be the answer, but, when I found myself eating agave syrup by the fingerful, without even bothering to cook it into something, I knew I had a problem)
Reply:I have recently bought some (haven't tried it yet).

It has the highest percentage of fructose (one of the only sugars usable by our cells), gives a sweeter taste with lowest

calorie count and gi than honey, sugar or other agaves.

6ml contains 25 calories, 6 g carbs and 5g of fructose.

If it is raw it will be rich in organic minerals. It is 100% vegan.

You should be able to get it off the internet, I did.

It is used in raw chocolates, cakes etc.

Good Question!

Reply:Agave is a cactus that grows in Mexico. They use the juice from it to make tequila.
Reply:agave is a plant found in mexico and the southwestern US. it is not a cactus, even though most people think it is. if you cook it and distill it, you can make mezcal, or depending on the type of agave, tequila
Reply:Well Agave is distilled and used to make tequila..there is also another plant that is called maguey that looks exactly like agave but the only difference between them is that agave can make tequila but maguey can't.
Reply:Agave is not only used to make tequila and mescal. It is also used to make sisal (a fiber used to make rugs).

Which, in your opinion, are the absolute best 100% Blue Agave, aged, Tequila Brands on the market today?

Favorite Anejo = Don Julio

Favorite Reposado = Cuervo Tradicional

Corazon, Corzo, Aguila, El Mayor, Cielo, Sauza Tres Generaciones.

Also good choices (and not as expensive...) Cuervo Black and Sauza Gold.

Stay away from Montazuma! :::shudder just thinking about it::::
Reply:Casa Noble and Tesoro de don Felipe are the best.

Actually.....I would hardly know the difference :-) since they are not available at my parts of the world. Love tequilla however....Jose Cuervo I think they are called and some other brands. But mostly I love margaritas. I make the best and all from scratch too. I also make a heavenly olive dip using tequilla as well :)

I want to know if you eat or swallow a agave worm will it hurt you. Mezcal Tequila worm inside bottle?

you can eat it if the worm had any germ's on it the tequila killed them ( my brother used to just swallow them )

I want to know if you eat or swallow a agave worm will it hurt you. Mezcal Tequila worm inside bottle?
No it does not hurt you.... That's why it's there....(tequila expert)
Reply:it's perfectly safe, and refreshingly crispy
Reply:The adage that the worm will get you actually implies that if you drink tequila (a whole bottle), it's the last shot (which will contain the worm if all goes right) that will knock you off your *** and onto the floor. That's why the worm is "bad" for you.
Reply:mezcal is not tequila. Tequila is similar to Mezcal in that they are both products of the agave plant. Mezcal is made only from Blue Agave. It is perfectly harmless to consume the worm.
Reply:No it won't hurt you. If it could it would not be in the bottle.

The sugar in Agave nectar?

I bought some Agave nectar today and im gonna put it in my oatmeal in the morning..will the sugar make me gain weight.

1 tablespoon has 16g of sugar..but if thats the only sugar I eat all day will it be fine? Cause I usually stick to my grains and veggies after breakfast

The sugar in Agave nectar?
You will be fine. A tablespoon of ANY sugar will not cause weight gain especially if consumed in the morning. Sugar in general is high on the gylcemic index so don't go nuts. In the morning is best.

Besides, Agave sugar is fantastic. You'll love it.
Reply:Agave nectar has one of the lowest glycemic indexes around. Lower than honey.

For an alternative, all natural sweetener, try stevia. It is very sweet tasting, but has no sugar whatsoever. It is the juice of a plant commonly called sweetroot (I believe).

Where does blue agave grow?

mexico, but you can grow it in sub tropical areas. i am in Savannah GA, and you can grow it here, it is closely related to Aloe Vera, and Century Plants, so if you can grow these outside you can most likely grow Agave. BTW it is a fairly large plant so you will need lots of room.

Where does blue agave grow?
It is native to the state of Jalisco in Mexico but is grown all over Mexico.

What is the difference between agave and aloe?

Agave can live well over 100 years. It blooms once after 100 years and then it dies. But in death it leaves behind hundreds of shoots that will continue it's own life.

Aloe is a beautiful plant, but it neither blooms nor lives to be 100 years old.

What is the difference between agave and aloe?
Two different plants, similar looking succulents. Agave you get tequila, the other lotion.
Reply:agave is used to make tequila and aloe is in lotion
Reply:Agave comes from a cactus and Aloe comes from an aloe plant
Reply:agave is big and aloe is smaller

Is mezcal a kind of AGAVE?

Mezcal is a Mexican distilled spirit made from the agave plant, and refers to all agave based liquors that are not tequila. Its fabrication and consumption is closely associated with the Mexican State of Oaxaca.

I can't seem to find molasses in London. Is there a subsitute? I found Agave Nectar. Is this the same thing?

You should find it in any health food shop eg Holland and Barratt. Ask at a large Sainsburys. It's probably in a specialist section. Good luck

I can't seem to find molasses in London. Is there a subsitute? I found Agave Nectar. Is this the same thing?
Don't ask me why I remember this. Just confirmed it in Wikipedia. Molasses in GB is called treacle.
Reply:I have bought Molasses in Holland and Barrett, and recently I found one in Tesco's, but I think it may be only in the larger stores and called Meridian Organic. You should be able to find it in any health food store.

I think Black Treacle is made by refining Molasses and although not quite the same it could be used as a substitute.
Reply:For a molasses substitute, you can use any of the following:

1 cup of molasses = 1 cup of honey

1 cup of molasses = 3/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar

1 cup of molasses = 1 cup dark corn syrup

1 cup molasses = 1 cup pure cane syrup

Agave Nectar is not the same thing as molasses. It's an artificial sweetener.
Reply:If you want malasses to smoke on a nargila or hooka pipe try camden market. i bought some there last time i went
Reply:Many of the major stores should have them if they don't you can order on line at the link below, also you could try using Lyle’s Golden Syrup, Maple syrup or brown sugar.

http://www.grandmasmolasses.com/grandmas...
Reply:Health Food shops sell molasses. If unable to buy from one, then a grocer or supermarket will sell (green) Treacle which is very similar. There is no substitute.

P.S. USA will refer to molasses in cooking, and UK treacle.
Reply:Yeah, there's a good place in Camden Market. Northern Line, Camden Town, Bob's your uncle.

If they don't have any there, go to this bloke who works in the Ground Floor Pub in Notting Hill, sit there for a while, until someone sits next to you, and turn to them and ask for molasses. It might be a bit solid, and you might find yourself smoking it, but hey,by then what do you care?
Reply:use honey for a substitute in any recipe you find. it has the same molecular composition as molasses just not as dense and

fatty.
Reply:No, Agave Nectar is not remotely the same.

Try black treacle syrup

http://www.britshoppe.com/lylblactreac.h...
Reply:Molasses is just another name for treacle. You can pick up a tin of treacle in the sugar section of any supermarket.

The Tate and Lyle version comes in a shiny red tin.

Happy Christmas x
Reply:Have a look here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Molasses

Quote: Cane molasses is a common ingredient in baking, often used in baked goods such as gingerbread cookies. There are a number of substitions that can be made for molasses; for a cup of molasses the following may be used (with varying degrees of success): 1 cup honey, or ¾ cup firmly packed brown sugar, or 1 cup dark corn syrup, or 1 cup pure maple syrup.

Unquote.

As someone has already said, in the UK molasses is known as treacle.

How do u ferment agave?

anyone know the things i need and how to do it?

How do u ferment agave?
You don't unless you live in MX, sorry.

Then you'd need to have the right kind of cacti and cook it to make the juice available for use, then press it in a cactus press.

It's a different process than making wine or beer, let alone tequila and the URL above doesn't even mention fermenting agave.

This one might be more helpful ::
Reply:First, agave isn't a cactus. To make tequila, you need to live in the Jalisco region of Mexico and have access to alot of agave plants. After growing for 7-10yrs, the leaves of the plant are removed and the pina (the root part, looks like a pineapple) is baked in clay ovens. Then it is mashed and the agave juices are drained and then used in the fermentation and distillation processes.
Reply:cactus ??

I do not know

but for sure the information is here just take your time and check the forum

Blue Agave growth rate?

Slow or fast grower? How many inches per year on average?

Blue Agave growth rate?
Also called the tequila agave and is in the Agavaceae family species. I believe it grows about 1 to 2 ft. per year.

There are wild and commercials species.

The wild blue agave will bloom a large spike straight up in the air... in it's 5 or 6th year of life and will usually die afterwards.

The commercial blue agave is grown to make ahem....Tequila. They remove the bloom spike so it can live a long life span.

The Agave Maguey...is a different species but looks similiar you can see a picture at the source link below.

Agave as a sweetener?

Hi all, so I read today that there is a sweetener made from the agave plant, the same plant made to make tequila, they said it can be used to sweeten things like corn bread and drinks ( ice tea and the like) so my question is has anyone tried this sweetener, and can you use it in recipes, for instance baking? Thanks for your help, no mean answers please!!

-Little Chef

Agave as a sweetener?
I love agave. I use it everyday. It can be used instead of sugar in just about everything. it dissolves instantly, is not overly sweet, and is very good for you (very natural). This fructose will not make your blood sugar spike and crash like other sugars and sugar substitutes. It keeps your blood sugar level consistent which is definitely a plus. And it doesn't have a strong flavor that you would get sick of either. Also, it only takes a very small amount to get the sweetness needed.

Hope I convinced you Little Chef! :)

Have you ever baked with Madhava Agave Nectar?

Is it the same as honey and does it work?

Thanks

Have you ever baked with Madhava Agave Nectar?
In recipes, use about 1/3 cup of Agave Nectar for every 1 cup of sugar. For most recipes this rule works well.

When substituting this sweetener in recipes, reduce your liquid slightly, sometimes as much as 1/3 less. Reduce your oven temperature by 25 degrees.

As a food exchange, a one-teaspoon serving of agave nectar equals a “free food”. Two servings or two teaspoons equals ½ carbohydrate exchange.

“Raw” agave nectar has never been cooked or exposed to temperatures over 115 degrees F.

Does agave make tequlia?

we are researching the climate of the desert in geography. we came across a word -- agave our teacher told us it made something but she won't tell us what it is? so does agave produce tequlia?

Does agave make tequlia?
Yeppers
Reply:It sure does..
Reply:Yes, I believe they make tequila from the nectar of the Agave cactus.
Reply:Yes aguave is the main ingredient in tequla. It is a spcific type of cactus!!
Reply:Agave is a plant, it doesn't distill tequila. But tequila distillers use it as an ingredient in tequila.
Reply:Yes, the blue one.
Reply:yes but it takes the cactus about 15 years before it is ready to make tequila
Reply:No, Mexicans do. They are called Jimadores.

They make it from the core of the Weber Agave (blue agave), not a cactus but a succulent related to the aloe family.

The outside leaves are stripped from the plant leaving the core or 'pina'. The pina is chopped into smaller pieces (they can weigh about 100 lbs whole), placed into ovens where they are baked to convert their starch into sugar.

The baked pinas are then crushed and washed to remove the sugar. the resulting juice is fermented into a 'beer' called pulque. Many of the people in Jalisco (the state in which the city of Tequila is located) drink the pulgue as is. It comes in a can like beer does.

The pulque is then distilled, normally twice, and either watered down to strength and bottled (white, silver or plata), aged from 2 to 11 months in oak barrels (Reposado) or aged beyond that point (Anejo).

I have visited several of the the distilleries in Tequila several times and the process is very similar at each distillery. Only the quality of equipment and the quantity produced seems to vary.
Reply:Yes. It's the key ingredient. Agave + water + heat + filtration + time = TEQUILA.

there are no shops in the pn that have those, they are listed on the trade embargo from other countries. Your best bet is to have them shipped in from out of country.

What is agave? some type of sugar. where can you get it?

not sure of the spelling. I do know it is a sugar or sugar substitute, mentioned on "Oprah" today with Dr Oz it was concerning dieting

What is agave? some type of sugar. where can you get it?
Agave is a sweetener extracted from a South American cactus, and traditionally used to make tequila. Often called "honey water," the agave nectar or agave syrup is light, both in taste and colour. It is runnier than honey and tastes much milder, but is in fact sweeter so even less is required in cooking. Agave is extraordinarily low glycemic - it has almost no impact on blood sugar, making it an ideal sweetener for diabetics and those who are sensitive to sugars.

What are some of the safest hummingbird nectar recipes? What about Blue Agave Nectar mixed with sterile water?

Here is the recipe recommended by the Smithsonian National Zoological Park in Washington, DC

Hummingbird Nectar Recipe

Directions for making safe hummingbird food:

Mix 1 part sugar with 4 parts water and bring to a boil to kill any bacteria or mold present.

Cool and fill feeder.

Extra sugar water may be stored in a refrigerator.

Red dye should not be added.

What are some of the safest hummingbird nectar recipes? What about Blue Agave Nectar mixed with sterile water?
1 cup sugar to 4 cups boiling water. Let cool, color with a drop of red color to attract them to the feeders, then it is not needed.

Boiling the water sterilizes it already, you don't need to use sterile water.
Reply:I would have to go with the Honey salt nectar mix. I find thats the best
Reply:I use tap water. I put red vegetable coloring and sugar. The red attracts the humming birds.
Reply:sugar water. it's a common misconception that the color red or any other color attracts them.
Reply:The best hummingbird nectar recipe is 1/4 c sugar in 1 c of water. You don't need to use red food coloring, and many people believe it is not good for hummingbirds to have it.

It is really important to boil the mixture and then let it cool. This sterilizes the water. Also be sure that the feeder is cleaned every time you replace the nectar and that you replace the nectar often enough that it doesn't mold - you don't want your hummingbirds to get sick.

As a guide, I replace the nectar every week during the winter here in Seattle, and every 3 days in the summer - since mold grows faster in warm weather.

Enjoy your hummingbirds!
